Pongal is the festival which is celebrated in the month of January. It is the festival celebrated in remembrance of Sun, the God with whose blessings the crops yield. Once the harvesting completes the farmers celebrate this function as a thanks giving function to the God Sun.
This function is set to been celebrated from the past 1000 years. Some say it is celebrated for more than 2000 years
The function which is celebrated in Tamilnadu as pongal is also celebrated in other parts of India also in different names, mainly in the name of Makar Sankranti. The function is celebrated for 4days. The first day is the Bhogi, during which the old items are cleaned and replaced by new ones. The second day is the Pongal or Sankarti during when pongal is made at home and poojas are done. The third day is most auspious day for the farmers known as Mattu Pongal or kanuma during which they workship thier cattles, clean them and decorate them. The fourth day is the kannum pongal during when the people visit their friends and relatives, gather in a place and enjoy.
