Pongal

Pongal is the festival of the Lord Sun. Sun is the God of Agriculture. He is who blesses the farmers to yield more in their lands. To show their gratitude in return to the God Sun, the farmers celebrate this festival in a grand manner for four days, starting from Bhogi to kannum pongal. Pongal is the name in which the festival is celebrated in Tamilnadu. In other parts of India and in other countries also the festival is celebrated in the month of January.

• In Karnataka it is known as Suggi Habba, Makar Sankramana , Makara Sankranthi
• In Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal and Jammu it is known as Makar Sankranthi
• Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab it is known as Maghi
• In Uttar Pradesh and western Bihar it is known as Khichdi
• In West Bengal it is known as Poush Sangkranti
• In Tamil Nadu it is known as Thai Pongal, Uzhavar Thirunal
• In Nepal it is known as Maghe Sankranti or Maghi- /Khichdi Sankranti
• In Bangladesh it is known as Shakrain/ Poush Sangkranti
• In Pakistan it is known as Tirmoori

The festival is celebrated for four days

• Day 1 – Bhogi
  • This is the day when the old used items including the tools used, dresses, home and others are cleaned and replaced with new items
• Day 2 – Pongal
  • This is the day when the God Sun is worshiped by making Pongal as sweet made with rice
• Day 3 – Mattu Pongal
  • This is the day when the land, cattles are worshipped
• Day 4 – Kannum Pongal
  • This is the day when the people enjoy with their relatives and friends by going or gathering in a common place
